SEX, VIOLENCE, AND SCENES OF A DISTRESSING NATURE

(Gel Fineliner on A5 Paper)

One of those artworks which makes you think twice about what you're looking at. If this was a photograph or a sculpture, I'd probably use a readymade but, in this case, I kept to the rules I have for Skav Art and drew something from memory. A simple, iconic image, which most are familiar with.

FF Spoof V: "THE NUBILE NYMPHS OF NUMARA"

Fighting Fantasy Spoof Page V

(2B pencil on 180mm x 120mm paper)

Still continuing with the spoof celebration of 40 years of Fighting Fantasy books, I added this particular example of the difficult traps some of the FF books would have for the player.

The Little Black Book Cover

A "Little Black Book" was something of a quasi-mythic thing, long before phones and social media absorbed physical address books. It was associated with promiscuous men and women, who'd record the contact details of their sexual partners. Many would claim to have such a book, but few actually did. Which is why it was rare to actually see one. Someone always knew someone who had one.

Its origins seem to stem from Henry VIII who was believed to have kept a "book of sin." This particular book, however, was probably used more to note his enemies, rather than a book of sexual conquests, but. it was that "sin" part of it which evolved into something which became the iconic "Little Black Book" we refer to today. Now, it's relegated itself to being nothing more than a common turn of phrase.

But, because it was such an iconic thing, I thought it might be a good idea to reference it with the above artwork. The one I've done is obviously fictitious, echoing the almost mythic nature they had. It's drawn with a 2B pencil in a small, eight page, A7 pad I made for myself. The comments, the tallies, and even the reworked latin phrase on the cover, pretty much sum up what they were and how they were used.

They were certainly of their time.

Hentai 4 Food

Has manga has lost it's cool?
(Black fineliner on 125mm x 75mm notecard)

In the 1980s and 90s, when it broke into the west, manga and animé had a cool factor that nothing else had. It was edgy, underground and subversive. If you read manga, watched animé, or you were a manga artist, you were part of a very select group.

But, those shining gems we were first given from the east were quickly submerged by a tsunami of low-budget shite. Both manga and animé soon became a shameful cliché of itself, further compounded by the flood of hentai which inevitably followed.

Now, whenever the words "manga" and "animé" are mentioned, they're associated with cheesy animation or sex, because that's all they're really worth now. A terrible fall from grace for what was once the coolest kid on the block. It's everywhere and nowhere, and worth nothing.

Even though I used to love drawing manga, this crude, half-arsed example here will be the last manga image I ever draw. Perhaps, one day, it can somehow regain part of that lost credibility, but until then it's nothing more than an unclean dirty whore, an embarrassment to view and use, very much like a sign written in comic-sans.

TOON TORN - 29th February

(HB pencil on a 139mm x 87mm postcard)
- NOT AVAILABLE -

Once every four years, on the 29th of February, everything in Toonworld changes. On this day of days all toons suddenly become mortal. There are no spinning stars or tweeting birds when one of them is hit. Bones can be easily broken, blood can be shed, and all face the horror of a real and painful death. Most run and hide until it's all over, whilst those who remain indulge themselves like they never could before and settle old scores in the most brutal way possible.

They swear like fucking bastards,
They fuck like fucking whores,
But mostly, they like to kill like fucking psychos.

It's hard to believe that those funny cartoon characters we all enjoyed watching as kids could ever be so nasty. But the ones you least expect tend to be the worst of all.

----------

A good transmorphic piece (meaning it grew as I was drawing it). Just a shame that I didn't manage to post it on the 29th of February!
